Look:
agate is always at least somewhat translucent. It is found in many colors. It often has beautiful bands. Mostly in brown, beige, black and orange. Very rarely in pink or purple. Then it is called Botswana agate. 🌈 Agate is a subspecies of chalcedony, just like the orange carnelian.
Agate is also often dyed. There are very beautiful colors and also very bright ones, like neon pink. I think it depends on the use. The dyed agates can look very nice as a wind chime in the window. However, a good dealer should point out the treatment.

History & Origin:
Agate was probably named after the river Achates (now Dirillo) in Sicily and is one of the oldest known gemstones. In ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome, agate was used for jewelry and amulets to bring protection and good luck. There is a wonderful exhibition on Egyptian jewelry in the Egyptian Museum in Munich!
It is still used today for gilding. No other material is as perfectly smooth and supple as polished agate. Agate is used to smooth the gold that has been applied.
In other cultures it was also considered a powerful stone of strength and harmony. ✨
The famous saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) valued agate for its special effects. She recommended the stone for emotional unrest and to strengthen the body. Hildegard of Bingen described agate as a helper for the "inner person" and believed that it brings peace and protection into the wearer's life. 🌿
